OUR PARTNERSHIPS
KTM does not implement its programs in isolation. KTM partners with both local and foreign partners to ensure it meets its objectives.
KTM has partnered with local organizations to implement programs. This includes SMARD (Solidarity Ministries Africa for reconciliation and Development) a partner in Southern Sudan that reaches out to refugees. KTM and SMARD reached out to refugees in Kakuma Kenya. KTM is also part of a refugee working group in Kampala Uganda that hosts atleast 5 entities that work with refugees in Uganda.
KTM has had a number of organizations with it in terms of donor grantee relationships where KTM has received funds to implement its various programs. Some of these include Cornerstone Trust, Mission Moriah to mention but a few.
Training in the Refugee settlement
Activities carried out as part of refugee outreach in our partnerships
Work with SMARD in Northern Kenya Kakuma refugee camp
KTM partnered with SMARD a local NGO from Sudan that held training in Kakuma refugee camp in North western Kenya. This was mainly on trauma healing and forgiveness and basic counselling skills.
Training in Southern Sudan
Atleast 2 trainings for church leaders on trauma healing, peace building and conflict management were held in Wau and Yei in Southern Sudan for five days each. The former Director (KTM) played a key role in ensuring these trainings were successful, for he travelled physically travelled to Yei and Wau in Southern Sudan.
Training in Refugee Settlements
With the support of Cornerstone Trust, KTM was able to hold 3 trainings in at least 3 refugee settlements in Uganda namely: Kiryandongo, Palabek in Lamwo and Rhino camps in Arua.
The trainings attracted a total of 183 participants (108 males and 75 females). The training focused on leaders with in refugee settlements with the hope that the information would be cascaded to the greater community.
There were 70 participants in Palabek, 53 in Kiryandongo and 60 particpants in Arua. The topics taught included:
After the training at least 12 peace clubs were formed which are community platforms upon which peace will be preached.
Livelihood Skilling Of Refufees
KTM also introduced an initiative in which refugees were trained in various hands-on skills with the objective of improving their economic status.
The refugees were trained according to their peace clubs. Each club had an opportunity to select at least two economic activities that they wanted to train in. The selected trades included: soap making, candle making, basket weaving, basic bakery, beadmaking, bag making.
Each settlement was encouraged to form at least 10 peace groups with 30 group members each. The peace group would also act as a support group through which members can support one another. The groups were tasked to come up with economic activities they would like to engage in as a way of boosting their livelihoods and reducing redundancy, idleness and dependency which perpetuates vicious behaviour leading to conflicts and disputes in the local community.
The beneficiaries selected short easy to train trades with good and quick returns. Selected trades included: soap making, basket weaving, bead making, shoe making and repair, goat raring, poultry, bag making. Bakery, candle making, and jelly making.
A total of 737 refugees were trained in skills with 180 people coming from 6 zones in Arua, 331 people trained in Palabek from 11 zones and 226 people in Kiryandongo from 8 zones. Every beneficiary had the opportunity to participate in at least one trade training. The training was done by local artisans who had knowledge of the language used within the local communities using locally available materials for the purpose of sustainability.
